February 15: Walnut Furniture, Info on Future Sales & a Note to Beta Testers

Hey everybody!

Hope you’ve all had a wonderful week since our last update. Portland has continued to treat us well, with some beautiful weekend weather we took advantage of by getting outside :)

This week we have a unique project we want to show off as well as some information about future sales of the machine. Additionally, we wanted to make our Beta Testers aware of the upcoming Backer Survey we will be sending out.

This week we were able to make use of our awesome ADX community and help out our shop space neighbor Nathan Dinihanian. Nathan is a furniture maker and is in the process of constructing a beautiful bed frame out of walnut. He used Maslow to cut router templates which he used to cut some of the walnut pieces for his bed! Nathan’s use of the Maslow is just one example of the useful production and prototyping abilities that Maslow has. In addition to making parts directly out of sheet goods, Maslow can also be used to make jigs, molds, and stencils, all of which are incredibly useful for woodworkers and expand the machine's capabilities. Check out some of the photos below that we snapped as Nathan has made progress on the bed. He still doesn’t quite have the finished product, but we’ll be sure to share a final photo of the bed once he’s finished. In the meantime, don’t hesitate to check out his website here, as I’m sure he would appreciate the support.

Now onto business. We’ve had a lot of people asking us about what our plans are for future sales of the machine. As I’m sure some of you know, we currently have a $1 waiting list that you can join through our website. Additionally, we’ve promised all backers who were not able to back us for a machine a spot at the front of the line when we open sales once again. We wanted to give an “official” word on what our plans are for future sales as of now because it's one of our most commonly asked questions.

As long as beta testing goes well, we’ll open sales once again in late April or May of this year with hopeful shipment in late August or September.

Before we fully commit to more sales of the machine, we want to make sure we have the resources to deal with all the issues which will come up with our launch. Maslow is an ambitious and groundbreaking project and with any such project issues will come up. We want to make sure that we can deal with those issues as effectively as possible. After a month of so of beta testing, we will settle on a hard date and plan for future sales. Assuming beta testing goes well, we’re imagining that we will open sales once again in the late spring of this year, ie end of April or May. We still haven’t settled on how exactly we’re going to go about future sales of the machine, but at this point we’re leaning toward selling the machine directly through our website. It’s possible we will use another crowdfunding platform as there are many benefits to this type of funding, but we think we may be able to get the machine into more people's hands more quickly if we do sales directly through our website. With sales opening again in the late spring, we hope to get those machines into everyone’s hands by late summer/early fall, ie late August or September. We know this is a long wait, but trust us that we are doing everything we can to get machines to everyone who wants one while at the same time supporting the community we have.

Finally, one more important matter of business. We are getting very close to shipment of Beta Tester Kits. Yay! If you are a beta tester, please be on the lookout for our Backer Survey in the next couple of weeks. We will use this survey to acquire crucial information when it comes to what exactly we will be shipping you and where exactly we will be shipping it. We greatly appreciate your prompt and accurate reply to the Backer Survey once we send it out.

What went wrong this week?

We hit a screw head while cutting this week. It wasn't a particularly striking experience, but the bit we were using was noticeably duller afterwards. A good reminder to use a piece of "waste board" behind the sheet you are cutting.

A bent link in one chain was giving us a headache and binding up on the right motor. How we got a bent link in the first place is a little bit of a mystery but it was easily fixed once it was found. Finally, some USB connection issues on Mac OS X 10.10 were giving us a hard time, but I think (fingers crossed) they are mostly resolved.

Thanks for reading! We hope you all have a good second half of the week and we’ll be back next week with another update that hopefully includes details on shipment of Beta Kits!

Until next Wednesday,

Hannah & Bar
