Happy Wednesday Everyone!
It’s been a BIG week for us. First and foremost we’ve moved into our space and we’re SOOO excited. From now on we are going to be working out of the offices of Art Design Portland (ADX) which means we’re part of a community of woodworkers, boat builders, furniture makers designers, and artists. Working at ADX is a great opportunity for us to observe Maslow being used for all different types of projects so we can learn what works and what doesn’t and improve the design. It feels fantastic to be a part of this community of makers.
The z-axis is finally for sale through our website! Head to www.maslowcnc.com and then click the tab at the top that says “Purchase Z-Axis”. From there you should be able to input your information and pay the $60 to get your z-axis add on! A couple of notes about purchasing the z-axis:
Our plan is to ship the z-axis in the same box as your machine kit. If you are a Regular Machine Kit backer, this shouldn’t be an issue. If you are a beta tester, there is a chance we will not receive all the parts for the z-axis in time to ship them in the same box as your machine kit. If this turns out to be the case, we will ship your z-axis add on to you in a separate box at no additional cost as soon as we get all the parts in our hands.
When checking out, you need to select which size of shaft coupler you will need to mount the z-axis motor to your router. We are going to provide a variety of options, but we will not be able to provide shaft couplers for every single type of router. If you don’t see the size you need when checking out, please select the option to source your own shaft coupler. If you have any concerns about this, feel free to reach out to us at email@example.com. We want to make it as easy as possible for everyone to use the z-axis. If you are having trouble sourcing your own shaft coupler, we are more than willing to help you figure it out.
When we send out our backer survey, please let us know on that form that you have purchased a z-axis through our website! Although we will have your name on record as having purchased a z-axis, we want the opportunity to double check that everyone who ordered a z-axis receives one. We will remind you about this again when we send out the backer survey in a couple of weeks.
We’re so excited to have the z-axis available for you all! We’ve been using it for the past couple of months and it definitely makes cutting with the Maslow that much easier.
Project of the Week
Our project of the week this week was a coat rack which looks like Sutro tower in San Francisco! Any of our backers from San Francisco will know that the Golden Gate Bridge is for tourists, the real symbol of The City is Sutro Tower, a radio tower on the highest hill in the city which is visible from almost every neighborhood. Out of nostalgia for The City and a genuine need for a coat rack I built a scale model of the tower this week to hold my hat.
What Went Wrong This Week:
You guys asked to hear more about what goes wrong each week, and this week we’ve got a good one. In my rush to get the PCBs manufactured I didn’t notice that in adding the 4th axis I broke a critical connection. The mistake was caught by an astute member of our community (Thank you!). The issue will be solved by soldering a connecting wire onto the PCBs for beta testers and a redesign is already being manufactured to test a permanent solution.
This issue highlights the importance of the Beta Tester program which gives us time to work through issues like this one, and shows the value of being open source. By sharing all of our work we can benefit from the community to make a better machine for everyone. You rock!
Have a great week everyone!
